Après une pause pendant les années 80, les Rolling Stones effectuent un grand retour sur scène en 1989 avec le ‘'Steel Wheels Tour’', leur plus longue tournée à l’époque. C’est aussi leur dernière avec le bassiste fondateur Bill Wyman.
‘Steel Wheels Live’ a été filmé en décembre, sur les dernières dates des 60 concerts donnés dans les stades d’Amérique du Nord. Les ventes de billets explosèrent bien sûr, mais surtout, la conception de la scène et de l'éclairage du ‘Steel Wheels Tour’ allait donner le ton aux tournées géantes telles que nous les connaissons aujourd'hui. La participation spéciale d’Axl Rose, d’Izzy Stradlin, d’Eric Clapton et de John Lee Hooker sur cette date à Atlantic City en font un document encore plus extraordinaire sur le retour du groupe sur les routes.
